NETWORK: Mayoral address

[ Appearances on the network by the mayor are rare. The general public is much more likely to hear from the police chief than from him. So when his face appears on the network, it's likely to bring the entire population of the city to a standstill, anticipating hearing his words.

Before the broadcast, an image appears on the network. Special announcement from Mayor Matthew Michaelis to follow. Several minutes later, the camera focuses in on the mayor, seated behind a large desk. He spends several moments, once the broadcast begins, to gaze at the camera in silence. Finally, he begins. He's a self-possessed man, not wasting time clearing his throat or shuffling papers. ]

Good evening. This afternoon, the government of the city of Gulch was contacted by the neighboring city of Zanzibar. Though we have had friendly relations in the past, this message was sent with a heinous accusation. As you know, the Charon corporation has headquartered several of its administrative departments in Gulch, in addition to the helmet plant on the south side of the city. Zanzibar claims to have obtained evidence that Charon is developing a new formulation of plague chemical, of a sort that would sicken large portions of the population if released in a densely populated area, despite the use of filters. Zanzibar fears becoming a test grounds for this chemical, and has accused the city of Gulch of supporting these efforts.

Of course, the government of Gulch, as well as Charon, have assured Zanzibar that no such activities are underway and that there are no intentions of releasing such a dangerous agent in their city. However, their conviction that this is taking place is unwavering. For this reason, we call on the population of Gulch to be cautious and to be vigilant in their dealings with new arrivals to the city.

As for our response, we are currently working with Charon to strengthen our defenses of the city, and are assembling a citizen guard for that purpose. Participation depends on enrollment, but those who can spare a few hours a month to patrol or spend time in the guard towers to alert to any sign of drones or other elements arriving from the city of Zanzibar should contact City Hall.

As always, our commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizenry is of ultimate importance. Thank you for your time, and good night.
