Log: All The Small Things

Who: Wash (OU) and you!
What: Wash has completed his first job as a mercenary and is out to celebrate it
Where: Out and about in town, picking up some better equipment, and then to the Eagle and Asp for a drink
When: Afternoon to night 29/11

It hadn't been the most glamorous of jobs, but any notion of glamour had been beaten out of him practically the day he'd enlisted. The important thing was that his first job as a registered mercenary had gone well and that was the first step to being able to take care of himself without having to rely on other people. Sure, it would take a few more jobs before he felt comfortable, but it was a start.

That was cause enough for celebration, right?

His first step is to head out to a supplier to stock up on equipment. Nothing fancy for now, but enough to get him started. A good gun or two, and a solid combat knife.

There's other things that he needs, an almost overwhelming amount, he realises now that he has the money to start thinking about it. Clothes that aren't fatigues or armour, and there's so many different kinds that it takes him far longer than it should to pick out what he needs.

And once that's done, he heads to the Eagle and Asp for a drink. It feels appropriate somehow.

"They're handy when you're in a tight spot," he agrees. And having them fold up small made it easier to keep hidden somewhere inconspicuous.

"Think there are nice pretty ones too?" Abby asks curiously. "I mean, they should be awesome, right? With flowers. Is it strong enough?"

"Probably. You can get pretty knives. As long as they're also well made, might as well get something you like too."

"Awesome!" Abby grins, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "What about ceramic knives?"

He thinks about that for a moment. "Lighter. Good for getting through metal detectors. But they're more brittle so they can chip or break more easily if they hit the wrong thing. They stay sharp though."

"Real metal it is then," Abby grins and when the proprietor brings up a few selections of butterfly knives she selects one with the sides with a thin enamel over pressed flowers and holds it out to Wash.

"Look at it, please."

He doesn't even know why she trusts him. It's bizarre. They barely know each other and she's trusting him with choosing her weapons. He could be lying for all she knows.

He takes the knife, tests the weight of it, the way it flips open. "Good choice," he says finally, handing it back to her.

"Great!" Abby grins, bouncing a bit. "I'll take that too. See, Jammy, you saved me all the effort today."

While the man nervously goes to do this, Abby beams at Wash. "You're a hero."

"I didn't do anything," Wash replied, giving her a baffled look. He'd just told her what to look for.

"You're a hero, don't argue with me," Abby tells him sternly. "Because you are and heroes don't determine that they are heroes, the people they help are. There."

"I acted as a shop assistant. I'm really not any kind of hero." He doesn't want to be. Doesn't want to have people expecting him to be any kind of good person.

"You're wrong, I'm right," Abby smiles up at him. "Hasn't anyone ever told you that teens don't care what adults believe? They have their own opinions."

"I- I haven't been around anyone who's a teenager since I was one," he says, giving her a somewhat uncomfortable look..

"Well, I'll tell you that teen are pretty absolutely certain that they are right, so this works," she grins. "So you're a hero."

"Apparently so," he says, a touch of sourness to his voice. "Don't get yourself killed now I've given you advice. That would just be embarrassing."

"It would," she agrees, laughing, shaking her head. "That isn't how it works. I live. I'm really good at surviving. I lived on the streets here, see?"

"All the more reason for it to be embarrassing if you die now," Wash replies dryly.

"I won't," she promises. "I've got a lot of people looking out for me. Like you."

She smiles as her packages are being handed over. She pays and grins as she puts her purchases into her bag.

"I'm not-" he begins and then sighs. "Fine." Whatever, she isn't going to listen anyway.

He pushes away from the wall he's leaning on when she's done, and goes to pay for his own things.
