Log: apartment hunting success

What: grabbing drinks after a day of apartment hunting

Sigma underestimated how exhausting apartment shopping could be. He and Texas hve filled out an application for a small apartment that's almost halfway along the shuttle line between campus and home. One bedroom, one bathroom, and reasonably-well furnished, with a decent location? It's better than he expected to find. He's triumphant but exhausted.

Still, when his sister invites him out for a drink afterward, he's eager to go. It's been fun, spending time with her by himself. He sees no reason to end the day out before he has to.

"The brains and the brawn. I like that. And you," with a point to Tex, "need to ease up on the sass, 'cuz I wouldn't still have a job if I couldn't measure out my shots. Hell, I don't even need a jigger if I need to go fast." It's all in the counting. "I know what I'm doing. We all got our skillsets. Mine seems to be in going, like, a quarter of the way to coyote ugly up in this bitch." Because if anyone starts dancing on the bars he's out. He's just out.

"You're telling me to ease up on the sass while you're saying crap like 'coyote ugly up in this bitch?'" Was he even serious anymore? She shakes her head and turns her attention to Sigma, who is far more reasonable.

"Surprised you survived that much calculus. How much of that do you use for your focus?"

"It was easier than some of the stuff you've taught me," he teases. "It comes up in my studies now and again. I'll need more of it the further along I get in the program, and by grad school, it should come up pretty regularly."

He would love to be the brains to Tex's brawn, even if he doesn't plan to be a mercenary. Not that he thinks his sister is at all unintelligent. Just focused on her fighting. Maybe she, like Omega, never had the opportunity.

He'll make them all proud.

What's wrong with what he says? She's the one giving him unnecessary sass. But it's okay. He can keep his mouth shut for, like, a minute or two and let the patrons talk without his insight and annoying interjections.

"Please, throwing a grown man onto the ground is easier than that." Among other things. Fighting came more naturally to her than differential equations. "Already have plans lined up for grad school?"

"You can say that because you've done it dozens of times. It's not so easy for the rest of us," he says. "And once you've integrated a function a few times it's just as easy to remember as the motions."

"I know I want to go into plague science. I just haven't picked a school. I'd like to keep my options open, I think. Find a program where I can study without selling my soul to them."

Plague science. He won't say anything, but man, how fucked up is it that they have classes in plague science because they're living in a place filled with chances of showers and deadly plague clouds? Maybe it's a sign they should all pack up and haul ass to another planet, but that takes money.

So does school. Hm.

"The program here isn't doing it for you? And you know, if you need help paying for it, we can figure something out." She'll avoid getting Florida involved again, but she can find a way to put some money back to help him out. Maybe see about Delta figuring out better ways to invest it for her.

"Plague science is really political," he says. "All the programs are very hush-hush about what they actually do. Some feed directly into big industries like Charon, and considering the rumors coming out of Zanzibar, they might not be using science to help people." He shrugs. "And that's not what I'm in it for. Who knows? Maybe I'll stay here. At least I know I can trust some of my professors."

"Kid, are you sure you'd want to stay here? I mean, I guess the city's nothing to sneeze at, but uh, it also kind of sucks." He rubs a glass thoughtfully. "'Course, you can't exactly fuck off to Zanzibar either. Another city. Or like, off the planet, I guess."

"Could go off planet," she says, a bit cautiously. How would Sigma fare leaving the family? It's not fair for him to limit his options. "Just depends on where you want to go and who you want to work with."

"Who ever manages to get off planet here, though?" he asks, shaking his head. "It may be miserable, but it's a case of the devil you know or the devil you don't. And studying plague clouds would be difficult without the clouds, too."

He doesn't imagine he'll ever get off this planet. That's life. And that's okay, because he has never planned to. His family could never afford it. He's happy staying where he is.

"Luckily, I have some mentors in the program. They'll talk me through options. I have another year before I have to decide, too."

"Hey, if you're as smart as your fancy degrees are going to say, then you'll get snatched up by some company or another in no time no problem."

[soldierinblack]

"There's still plenty you can do here," she replies and taps her fingers lightly on the bar top. "But if you find something better off world, you should at least try for it. Doesn't hurt to keep your options open. We can figure something out."

"I am," he says. "And that's what I'm hoping for."

"It's true. I should have plenty of options. And plenty of time." He shrugs. "For now, I'm just doing what I can and staying on top."

"Better than a lot of people here can do. Be on top, I mean." Hm, that didn't sound weird, did it? Hopefully it didn't.
