Log: Settling In

York's safe house really had turned out to be a good choice. The security was good and it does make him feel better knowing that it was there. Lets him sleep more easily, when he actually manages anyway. It's better than staying in the casino with the constant noise of people outside leaving him on edge.

Getting to grips with the city is a top priority though, and has him heading out . Exploring. Scoping out is probably more accurate, treating it like he would a mission.

The shopping district seems the best place to start, busiest at least, and a good place to figure out what's normal here. The helmet store has a wide variety of them in the window, and he scans a catalogue showing enhancements and mods that are available. Some of those would be pretty useful if he's honest with himself. There's weapons shops too; nothing as heavy as the weaponry he's used to having at his disposal, but it's a start. There's a nice set of knives in there too. Now that is something he's going to have to get hold of.

He spends lunches in the park. It's a little surreal to see the covered ceiling up above and know that the sky outside could kill him, but it's nice to take off his helmet for a while. The place is climate controlled, and considering the last places he'd been at home had been a desert, an icy wasteland and a humid pit of a canyon, he's not complaining.

There's a little cafe a few minutes walk from the safehouse that stays open all night, and it's a better option to be there than sitting awake and twitchy in the safe house when he can't sleep.

"That requires a whole lot of backstory and complicated stuff that you probably don't want to hear. It's a fucking mess honestly."

"Dude, it fucking sounds like it. Still, I mean...y'know, if you find yourself drinking at the bar and I'm there and you want to say a thing, I'll...yeah."

"I'll bear that in mind. God knows I could use a drink sometimes." He manages a small smile.

[alphawho]

"I don't know how you aren't drinking down the entire bar right now. Sounds like you could stand to forget a lot."

[notyourrookie]

"A couple of lifetimes worth," he says with a mirthless grin. "I doubt it would help." He'd probably just remember Epsilon's memories.

[alphawho]

Well. This has all been enlightening. Aaaand depressing. "Still gonna encourage you to drop whatever extra cash you have at the bar whenever you get the chance. Obviously."

"Obviously," he says. "I'm sure I'll get over there at some point. I'll try not to wreck the atmosphere."

"Just don't start talking to me like I'm other me, since I'm not the one you know, and also if you even try to be like the Wash I know, it'll just...be weird."

"What's he like?" Wash asks impulsively. "The one that you know?"

[alphawho]

"Happy, healthy, with a team that doesn't backstab him. Has a girlfriend. They're kind of adorable. Yeah, adorable seems like the word. Like, if you didn't know he was a merc, you wouldn't know it to look at him."

"Asshole," Wash muttered. It sounded like the kind of ideal life you saw in magazines. Except the merc thing. "He probably owns... things. Like cutlery. I bet he owns cutlery. And probably a sofa."

"I own cutlery and a sofa, what the fuck is your deal?"

[notyourrookie]

"I don't. I mean, I own knives. But not cutlery and I've never owned a sofa. They're all..." He pauses, rubs the back of his neck to get his thoughts in order. "Things you get when you belong in a place." When you're settled.

[alphawho]

"And I'm sure as a super awesome soldier boy you probably lived in a barracks or whatever. Now that you're living here, you can start owning shit. It'll be awesome. Get you some video games and shit."

[notyourrookie]

"Barracks, cramped rooms on a spaceship. Yeah, pretty much." Always a situation where he had to be ready to pack everything he owned into a duffle-bag ready to ship out to somewhere new. The MoI had given him a little more leeway, but not much. "I'm still not entirely convinced this isn't all some very long elaborate hallucination."

"Well, if either of us wake up, hopefully what's woken up to isn't...worse. But I mean I guess your old life sucked massive dangly balls, so I hope this actually is real?"

"Last time I thought things were over I woke up worse off so- yeah." Waking up in medical and being told you were going to prison for treason when all you'd wanted was for it to be over. "That's... actually a nice sentiment coming from you."

[alphawho]

"Yeah, well. I'm still in bartender mode," he scoffs. "Don't let the perceived niceness fool you, asshole!"

"Don't worry, I know better, cockbite," Wash replies, his grin sharp, about as genuine as it gets.
