Log: All The Small Things

Who: Wash (OU) and you!
What: Wash has completed his first job as a mercenary and is out to celebrate it
Where: Out and about in town, picking up some better equipment, and then to the Eagle and Asp for a drink
When: Afternoon to night 29/11

It hadn't been the most glamorous of jobs, but any notion of glamour had been beaten out of him practically the day he'd enlisted. The important thing was that his first job as a registered mercenary had gone well and that was the first step to being able to take care of himself without having to rely on other people. Sure, it would take a few more jobs before he felt comfortable, but it was a start.

That was cause enough for celebration, right?

His first step is to head out to a supplier to stock up on equipment. Nothing fancy for now, but enough to get him started. A good gun or two, and a solid combat knife.

There's other things that he needs, an almost overwhelming amount, he realises now that he has the money to start thinking about it. Clothes that aren't fatigues or armour, and there's so many different kinds that it takes him far longer than it should to pick out what he needs.

And once that's done, he heads to the Eagle and Asp for a drink. It feels appropriate somehow.

"Not if it's for your job, man. What do you do for fun? Even if it's just going out partying."

He shrugs, and it's sad that he actually has to think about it. "I used to skateboard," he admits finally. "But that was a few years ago now. Since then I- uh..."

Nothing. There's nothing.

[alphawho]

"Hey, Theta skateboards. Not that any of the big brothers would let you be anywhere near him, but. That's about as much as I know of skateboarding. Offered me to try it out and declined. Pretty sure I'd fall straight on my ass."

Look, he gets that a military life can lead to not having room for other things, but even soldiers have down time. "So there we go. You pick up some hobbies and fun things when you're not...doing whatever kinda jobs you're gonna do as a merc."

He knows that Theta skateboards. He'd taught him how. Back home. He'd taught him there. "Everyone falls on their ass a few times." It's part of how you learn.

"Anything I can get paid for," he says. "And yeah, I guess. Have to figure out what there is to do." He knows people do things, he just isn't sure what those things are.

"You saying I should take up skateboarding? I mean, guess I'm more built for that than bodybuilding, heh. Hey, so have you met any of-" There's a pause of hesitation. "-that family yet while you've been here?"

"Sure, why not," Wash says with a small smile. "Maybe you'll enjoy it. You could skate with Theta." It seems like something that Theta would like.

He gives a slow nod. "A couple of them, yeah."

[alphawho]

"Maybe you could skate with us. Both of you can make fun of me falling around everywhere." And gets him involved. With people. Doing something fun. Come on, Wash.

"Must be....uh, must be weird. All the different versions of people you thought you were familiar with. I can't imagine."

"I'm not- I don't think that's a good idea." Theta is a kid here, and Wash remembers him helping North to slaughter. It's jarring and uncomfortable. "And you already said his family wouldn't be happy."

He had no idea. "Some of them seem fairly similar. Not identical but... close. Others are really, really different. It's fucked up."

"His family's not exactly always right. Or stable. Which, I dunno, maybe you got a sense of that. It's...kind of a mess." He rubs the back of his neck. "What isn't, I mean, jesus, being from another world, I can't talk shit about messes."

"I might have some idea," Wash agrees, but really he knows he's thinking about the AIs at home. "Everything was fucked up at home so I don't see why it would be different here."

[alphawho]

"...Yeah. I mean. Yeah. Sure. Guess some things just have to stay the same across universes."

[notyourrookie]

Wash gives him a wry smile. "Hopefully not too similar. I mean, none of you are military for a start."

[alphawho]

"God, yeah, I can't see me ever participating in stuff like that, sorry. Not even doing whatever kind of oversight thing I was doing in yours. Nope. I prefer not painting a target on my back, thanks."

"That's for the best. I think you'd hate it." And be a terrible shot. Always a good thing to remember. "It- I was good at it. And it still fucked me over."

[alphawho]

"Dude, you don't have to tell me twice. Why do you think I reacted with surprise and suspicion to you looking happy?"

[notyourrookie]

He shifts uncomfortably. "Haven't had anything to be happy about in a while. Trust me, I'm as surprised as you are."

[alphawho]

"Being happy won't get you killed. It'll work out eventually. You'll find a place for yourself in this world and, I dunno, I guess work out better than back home. Maybe."

[notyourrookie]

It felt like it would. "No, it's just more of a kick to the gut when everything gets torn away from you," he says dryly. "And yeah. Maybe. There's... a limited number of ways it could end up worse honestly."

[alphawho]

"Y'know what, it sounds like you could stand to get drunk in your celebration. Maybe it'll make you temporarily forget how shitty a life you apparently had."

[notyourrookie]

"Now that sounds like a plan," Wash replies, his smile widening a little. "Haven't got anything else lined up for tomorrow so..." He'll just have to drag himself back to York's place to sleep it off

"No problem. I'll keep the drinks coming until we've both had enough. I'm sure you've probably got, like, some stupid high metabolism or something."

[notyourrookie]

"Deal," Wash replies. "And yeah, I do. Burn through food like crazy."

[alphawho]

"Blow all your cash here. I like this plan more and more with every passing moment."

[notyourrookie]

"I did just get paid. And bought what I need. I can afford to spend one night drinking."
