"I didn't say that. I was glad to get away from that pit of a colony. And being here... It's exhausting, sure. But I get to find new places. Decide where I want to go without worrying about anyone else."

Delta sighs at that one. It's... almost wistful. What would it be like, out there, on his own, no one relying on him but himself?

"I wish I could taste that. Having to worry only about me. No burdens on me but my own life. No expectations of me."

He both hates and longs for it. And hates himself for longing for it.

"I think I need another drink."

"It's on me," Wash says. "Same again?" he asks, gesturing to the drink.

"The trouble is, you find out you have expectations of yourself."

"Something fruity," Delta decides, but he's not certain what.

Expectations of himself? Delta can't help but chuckle and shake his head. "Survival. My certification. Those would be my expectations. Not be someone people shaped the life of. They... I've made a decision for myself once. And was forced back out of it. Sure, it gave me my job, but that's all."

His other decisions, he's made two other... Dating Maine. Breaking Maine's heart. And isn't that what his life keeps coming back to.

"It's not just survival though. It's how you survive. That's... harder than it should be sometimes." His desire to survive was strong and he'd thought it was at any cost but now? He's not so sure.

Fruity is good. And considering who the bartender is, he's sure they can figure something out. He gestures for Church. "Any suggestions for something fruity for my friend?" he asks.

He hasn't been eavesdropping. Too much. Guy's got clients to take care of, here, c'mon, he's not here to listen in on everything. Church wanders on over. "I have no end to fruity concoctions. Seriously. Thought he wanted choco-coffee booze?"

"How you survive?" Delta asks, quite confused. "I'm not sure I understand the distinction."

But now Church is here so Delta sighs and straightens up in his seat as best he can. "I had that. Drank it. Almost gone, see? So now I need something else. No tequila please."

Well jeez, Delta, don't look so overjoyed to see him or anything. "Yeah, I do actually have eyes under here, so I do see. Do you want me to mentally spin the wheel of fruity fortune?"

"Is it 'survive at all costs'? Is it... survive out of hope or out of spite or because you don't know how to do anything else?" He definitely hadn't survived out of hope of something better. He was just too stubborn and angry and bitter to lie down and die.

"Oh, I'll do that!" Wash says when it's offered. New drinks to try is something he's totally up for.

"What about survive because it's the only thing I know how to do?" Delta suggests to Wash before returning his attention to his older brother.

"Spin the wheel please. For both of us."

Are they just...are they just ignoring the sarcasm or trying to make his life harder? Or both? No reason it can't be both. "Wheel of fruit cocktails, turn turn turn," he grumbles, slinging together the first things he can think of that are fruit and also not tequila.

Hey, if Church is going to offer new and exciting fruity drink potential, he has to get used to being taken up on it. "Should have you dressed up in a sequinned jacket or something," he says to Church.

"If that's it," he says to Delta, "then it's tiring. Because it's not the same as drive. But you'll always find something. And then that reason will be gone and you have to find a whole new reason. But you do, because there's always one more thing to do."

"Thank you Church," Delta tells his older brother very honestly, fishing a few bucks out for a preemptive tip for the drinks. "You haven't disappointed me before, and I trust you won't now."

With that he turns his attention to Wash. "You're saying better to just stick with what you got?"

Hey, he never promised 'new and exciting'. That is not a thing that ever came out of his mouth. "Man, this sounds like a depressing conversation. No wonder you need new drinks."

Wash shrugs, and finishes off the last dregs of his cocktail. "The plan was to come out and get wasted," he admits with a small smile. "After the storm I'm not surprised things get a bit maudlin."

He was definitely intending to have trouble walking when he left.

"No. Not that. Sometimes sticking with what you know is just as bad. Sometimes you need a change. But it's hard. It can get better but even if it's the best thing in the world, getting there is still difficult and tiring."

"It's more than just the storm," Delta shrugs, looking up at his older brother. "You know who got stranded at the house during it. It was absolute joy. Oh, and so was Louisiana, so that was even more fun. Best Omega birthday party ever."

And the first. So not a good record.

Again his attention is on Wash, because that almost sounds good. "How do you change, though? When you've spent your whole life in a rut, how do you change?"

He's not sure why there's a problem with Louisiana, but he's met her all of, what, maybe once? So whatever. Delta has a problem with...everyone, at last count. "I'm guessing 'fall through a portal into another universe' is off the table."

In Wash's opinion, being stuck anywhere near Omega would be dangerous and unpleasant, but then he'd met this world's Omega and he hadn't seemed that terrible. Same with Sigma. It kept throwing him off.

He gives Church a look at that, lips drawn tight together. "Yeah, that would be crazy."

"So far as I know from that Nida kid Theta hangs out with, it's a one way thing," Delta waves Church's comment off. "And I wouldn't want to be that far away. I'd have trouble with a long weekend away from my family."

Partially because of the ire it would provoke, no doubt.

What, is it some sort of secret or something? C'mon. "That surprises literally nobody, Delta. Actually nobody."

Delta glares at his older brother for that.

"Where are our drinks?"

Not exactly, but he hasn't told Delta yet and admitting it now is going to be... weird, especially when he'd tried to not be recognised as Other Wash. "You might end up somewhere terrible anyway," Wash says. "I mean, middle of a war or something."

"I sense in you much hostility, young grasshopper." He strains one out in front of Delta, shakes another up and pours it out for Wash. "Patience comes to those who wait. ...Wait, that's not it. Booze comes to those who wait, though."

Sometimes Church is the best of his siblings, and sometimes the most frustrating. Delta isn't even sure which this time is.

"Thank you anyway, even if I don't want patient."

Oooh, language. He takes his drink, sips, and nods in approval before addressing Wash's point.

"See, thing is, this Nida kid apparently did or something. Got ninja skills. Church, you ever see that video online of that guy fighting the air with the mop? Some people did edits to make him fight stuff? That's the kid. Weird. Anyway, says he came out of a war, so guess this place is only comparable terrible."

"Sometimes patience is overrated," Wash says, bug he takes a sip of his drink. Church is actually damn good at this. Definitely a better bartender than a solider.

He chews idly on the straw while Delta explains. "Not being constantly ready for combat is pretty nice. Shame kids get sucked into that kind of bullshit though."
