Per Sigma's suggestion, Delta's prompting, and Omega's invitation, tonight is the first night Maine is welcomed back into the lives of the Ais. Dinner is set for an hour after Maine is due to arrive, giving him plenty of time to socialize, and there are board, card, and video games out in the family room for before dinner if needed and after dinner indeed. Everything is ready for the friend to be welcomed back by a joyful family.

Gamma gives Sigma an angelic smile as he hands Omega the controller so his older brother can take his turn. Omega mutters several things he could do to Gamma and flips through the cars. "What do you think, Sigma, is this truck heavy enough to take out a city bus and keep going?"

He and Gamma have an understanding. He winks at his brother.

"No," Sigma says. "Not even close." Gamma doesn't have to cheat if Omega misunderstands video games' (mis)application of the laws of physics.

"I'm not stupid," Omega reminds Sigma. "It can knock the bus right off the road and keep moving. The question is, can it keep moving far enough."

It'll be close. But he'll try it.

Sigma doubts it can, so he settles back to watch. "Is that the point? To see how far the traffic disaster can get?"

Omega nods. "Cause as much monetary damage as possible." It's easily the greatest game he's ever found in a bargain bin. "It's basically bad driving, the game."

"I'm so glad you have your driver's license when you've been influenced by this."

Omega curses at his score and hands the controller back to Gamma.

"Excuse you, I am a wonderful driver. Have you ever seen me get so much as a scratch on a car?"

He looks at Gamma. "Hey, you're old enough to learn to drive for real, right?" Did they change the law?

"I haven't," he admits. "It's just a societal observation."

Oh no. Gamma, driving? He can't be old enough for that.

"I am quite capable of telling the difference between a video game and real life, thank you very much." Omega rolls his eyes.

"You won't even argue that this might be a useful life skill someday?"

[baruthumos]

"What? No, these cars are unrealistically explosive," Omega says. "It would be like learning how to breed horses with Pokemon. Not everything needs to be educational."

"But it's more fun if it's educational," Sigma points out. "And scientifically accurate."

[baruthumos]

"No," Omega argues, "it's more fun with big numbers and big fireballs."

[ambitious_muse]

"You can have both if you study the right thing."

Yes, it's more difficult, but Sigma's enjoying the casual banter.

"But we're not studying," Omega points out. "We're playing a game."

[ambitious_muse]

"I wish I had time for games."

Only with his family. And York. And occasionally Lou. He works too much.

"Work less," Omega says. "Or sleep less."

He's not dumb enough to suggest Sigma see York less. Though he's had a lot more time to play video games this winter and spring.

"Grad school's not going to pay for itself," he reminds his brother. "At least lab work is fun."
