There are times where no matter how hard she tries, things just don't go her way. She'd thought the open air markets had been a good place a few days ago. She'd lifted money from some people, had food with others, and so despite her normal reservations, she opted to repeat the trip.

First rule of thieving: don't hit the same place twice in a short period of time.

Abby should have remembered that. Today she hasn't. Today is one epic failure after another, and if not for the fact that she needs to eat tonight, she'd probably give up, throw in the towel, and slink back to her safe spot.

Instead she's rushing through the crowd, trying not to get caught by the man searching for her, much less relinquish her pathetic take for the day.

"Crowds I can teach you," Abby grins. "Hell, some things are easier to learn when you've got two people around. Even now a pair of girls giggling together are assumed to be gossiping or talking about cute boys, and not seen as a threat."

Dude maybe... she could use Roxy to increase her takes? No, she can't risk the other girl when she's clearly got something stable. Quick, change subjects...

"You've got really pretty contacts."

Roxy cackled at that. "Wow, seriously? Man, I'm all for that. Both real and fake, both sound fun," she said. She certainly wouldn't be against increasing her take.

And it's not like her 'stable' was exactly legal. Well, one was, the other was highly illegal.

"Contacts?" She said, looking down. Contacts, did she have a phone out? Why-oh, no, wait. "Oh! You mean my eyes? Nah, that's just their color."

"What?" Abby asks, shocked enough to put down the chip she is holding. "Those... your eyes are actually that pretty?"

Wow, imagine having such pretty eyes all the time. That's just insane!

Roxy nodded. "Yep! Bit of weird gene things happening, so my whole family got really pretty, vivid eyes."

"Well they look good," Abby answers, returning her attention to the chips.

Don't get fond, she reminds herself. People aren't like that. Out of sight and she'll be out of mind.

"Thank you. I like your eyes too. Like a dark amber," she said. Because when Roxy says someone's pretty, she means it. Really all the girls deserve all the compliments.

"Of course you like them," Abby insists. "I'm the cutest person, like, ever."

"Certainly the cutest in this universe," she agreed.

Abby laughs. That is a weird thing to say, but she'll take it. "The cute helps, when your helmet is off. People trust it more. I guess there is an assumption that pretty people can't be dirt poor."

"Really? Weird. Know a lot of pretty peeps who are poor," Roxy said with a thoughtful frown. Assumptions were WEIRD.

"None as pretty as me. In this universe," Abby laughs, more than willing to use Roxy's stipulation.

"Oh, defs. Real pretty, but ain't your pretty," Roxy said as the waiter returned with their drinks.

Abby smiles and reaches for her drink and then grabs more chips and salsa. "What is it you do, Rox?"

"Apprenticing in a garage for the most part," Roxy said. "Grif's teaching me 'bout cars, I get to live rent free, pretty sweet deal." There is a pause as she plays with the straw of her drink. "I also do some merc work on the side. A few jobs a week."

"Merc work?" Abby whispers. This is awesome. "At ou... your age?"

She only just realizes that she might be assuming Roxy's age.

"No papers, and damn minority laws. Teeeechnically I don't think I'm even registered as an employee at the garage? Not like Grif's enforcing any schedules or anything," she said with a shrug. "But merc work is already full of illegal shit anyway, so, if I can do it, why not?"

"You think I care about legality?" Abby asks. She reaches for her pocket and pulls out a cheap necklace of a slice of dyed pink agate on a chain. She passes it over to Roxy.

"I almost got in a lot of trouble for taking this. You think I care about legal?"

"No, I don't," Roxy said. "Kind of picked up on the whole why the guy was chasing you. But legal....I learned early on that if the powers aren't willing to help those who need it, they dun deserve to be followed."

"But merc work is dangerous. Either you need to be super skilled to do the stuff that isn't so dangerous, or be ready to be shot at. It's good money, but it's risky as fuck. So if you wanted to try, you'd need to learn, and you'll want back up for a while."

"Try?"

Abby actually laughs, loud and amused "No. No, I don't want to try. God, mercs get hurt, mercs die. I'm trying hard enough to live as it is. So yeah, no."

"Oh," Roxy said and looked thrown off. "Then...why were you going on about not caring about legal?"

"I'm a thief," Abby points out. "I'm saying I live a highly illegal life. I have no place, or care, to judge what you do."

"I didn't think you were," Roxy said. She had a feeling this was some cultural thing she was missing. Ugh, she hated that. "Judging, I mean. If I was doing horrible evil shit, yeah, you could judge, but I thought you'd at least confirm it first or something."

"Adaptive is... fucked up. It's really no more complicated than that," Abby answers, returning her attention to the chips. "The rich get richer. The poor die in the streets."

"Still. Might be able to change it one day," Roxy murmured, taking a sip of her water. Robin Hood. It was still such a tempting idea.

Abby has to roll her eyes. Because, hell, she gets how impossible that is. She can try all she wants. Abby figures she'll be long dead before she sees anything resembling change.
