Log: All The Small Things

Who: Wash (OU) and you!
What: Wash has completed his first job as a mercenary and is out to celebrate it
Where: Out and about in town, picking up some better equipment, and then to the Eagle and Asp for a drink
When: Afternoon to night 29/11
Warnings: None so far



It hadn't been the most glamorous of jobs, but any notion of glamour had been beaten out of him practically the day he'd enlisted. The important thing was that his first job as a registered mercenary had gone well and that was the first step to being able to take care of himself without having to rely on other people. Sure, it would take a few more jobs before he felt comfortable, but it was a start.

That was cause enough for celebration, right?

His first step is to head out to a supplier to stock up on equipment. Nothing fancy for now, but enough to get him started. A good gun or two, and a solid combat knife.

There's other things that he needs, an almost overwhelming amount, he realises now that he has the money to start thinking about it. Clothes that aren't fatigues or armour, and there's so many different kinds that it takes him far longer than it should to pick out what he needs.

And once that's done, he heads to the Eagle and Asp for a drink. It feels appropriate somehow.

"Something sweet," Wash replies, grinning, "with an umbrella." Because he's not drinking purely to get smashed right now, and also it's entertaining to fuck with Church.

"No problemo." ??? WHICH ONE IS IT??? He totally doesn't show any signs of...not recognition! He totally knows which one! Totally!!! This Wash will get himself something sweet and fruity with an um--

"You're an asshole, I know Ranger Rick doesn't have to order any umbrellas." SEE HE HAD YOU PEGGED THE WHOLE TIME

"Maybe I just worry about the state of your memory," Wash replies with an easy shrug. Church's reaction is worth it, honestly.

"...Oh wow. Maybe you don't get any umbrellas after all."

[notyourrookie]

Wash gives him an indignant look. "But... but I'm buying a drink." And if he's buying, then he should get an umbrella, right?

[alphawho]

"You get the drink but if you're gonna mock a man's memory issues, clearly you don't get to have an umbrella." There. There's your drink. Sans umbrella. "Sorry I don't make the rules deal with it."

"How was I supposed to know you have memory issues here?" Wash asks, and there is something definitely sulky that comes to his expression when Church hands over the drink. Without an umbrella. "Fuck, i've got enough memory issues of my own."

"...Shit you have the same stupid-ass pout, too, fine, jesus, here." Have an umbrella. Have three! Just stop pouting? "Didn't realize you had. Y'know. Problems. Or whatever. Let's just pretend none of this happened just now."

Three umbrellas. This is the best day ever. Of all time. He flashes Church a grin and leans in to sip at his drink.

"Really?" he asks, "because everyone else I've met seems to be able to tell a mile off. Or maybe they're just comparing me with him more."

"I mean memory problems, whatever, drink your stupid drink."

"Yes sir." Wash nods and takes another sip of his drink, still leaning against the counter.

[alphawho]

"Oh my god. When did you turn into such a chipper guy? You looked like an actual spectre of death before, and now you're...Rescue Ranger but with a little more snark."

[notyourrookie]

Wash shrugs at that. "Got some work. I don't do well with too much downtime."

[alphawho]

"Yeah, but like...you're chipper about it. Downright happy. I wasn't entirely aware you were capable of that emotion. So, y'know, good on you."

[notyourrookie]

"I'm not-" He shakes his head, focusing on his drink instead. "It means I can stop relying on other people."

[alphawho]

"No, I get it. Cuz that feeling sucks when you're used to being independent as fuck. So you're a full fledged merc now? Not running with the For Hires, are you?"

[notyourrookie]

"Yeah. Passed their tests. Got registered." It's a little strange, but Agent Washington: Mercenary, can't be all that different from Agent Washington: single-minded soldier. He's got fewer stakes in these jobs at least. "No. I'm working alone. Got no interest in a team."

[alphawho]

"Mercs are usually welcome here, so, you're good here so long as you don't fuck with anyone else. Which, y'know, you wouldn't, being alone, so. Congrats."

[notyourrookie]

"Why fuck with someone if I'm not getting paid for it?" he asks blandly. He's got no reason to start trouble. He'd prefer not to make a reputation for that bullshit.

[alphawho]

"Hey man, you never know. But I prefer the whole not starting shit in my bar thing. Keeps everyone alive, the glassware intact, and no blood to clean up."

[notyourrookie]

"And the mercs who come here don't have to worry so much about getting shot in the back while they relax. I get it." A safe place to be off duty was definitely a nice perk.

[alphawho]

"I mean shit still happens, but shit'll happen no matter where mercs go, aaaand most of the shit happens with the drunk rowdy customers anyway. Pretty sure I can trust you not to do anything stupid. Could have you as a bouncer."

[notyourrookie]

"Not sure I'm bouncer material," Wash says with a snort. "I think usually your bouncers need to not find it quite so easy to kill people." He'd worry about it, about whether he was going to hurt someone badly by mistake.

"...I mean, yeah, I'd kind of hope you don't usually kill people when you don't mean to."

"Not usually. Never been a bouncer though. People attack me, I react."
