LOG: Restock, Aisle Every Single One

It's not that they were eaten out of house and home. But they were pretty much eaten out of house and home. With a family that often has to have shopping done every day, keeping food stocked for bad storms isn't easy. There is always a supply of extra rice, beans and canned veggies when things go bad, and they've almost run out.

Which is why Delta's here, and not just with a little cart. If York wants to spend time with him, it has to be on a timetable that doesn't ruin Delta's carefully managed schedule. Which means getting things together. And York has a damn car. So it is that Delta leads his friend through the grocery store with two carts. Bless the thing for already having restocked after the storm.

"We need more bread, and definitely peanut butter and jelly."

York is determined to not mess this up. He's not going to mention Maine, he's not going to talk about the party or Florida or how Delta's doing or anything like that. And he's going to see how that goes. Maybe it'll be better, maybe not. But he's not going to know unless he tries it at least once.

He's helping Delta in a different way, at least, taking some of the stress off. This would've been a huge trip for just one person, and even with two, it's pretty big.

'You want white or brown?' he asks, looking at the large shelf of different breads. 'And how crunt-shy do you guys like your peanut butter?'

"Both," Delta admits. "I eat the brown with some of the adults, we give the children the white. Makes sure everyone gets sandwiches. As for peanut butter, the twins are young enough that creamy peanut butter is a sin."

With a frown he heads further down from the display of bread, just across the aisle really, and finds the jelly display. Purple is the choice he has to go for, so he gets the biggest thing of grape jelly he can find at the most reasonable price. "I also need to remember to get fruit cups or boxes of raisins."

Nodding, York grabs a few loaves of each and adds them to one of the carts, then moves onto peanut butter. He's not used to checking the price of things, but for this trip, he's trying to be more aware.

'They should be further down the aisle, or in the next one,' he says, finding a suitably sized, priced and textured jar of peanut butter. 'What shall I get next?'

Wow he's being helpful. Well, Delta can make use of that. "I need fruit juices. They'll be here. Grape, apple and cranberry."

That will cover everyone separate from the orange juice.

'You got it.' He pushes his cart down the aisle, humming as he scans the shelves and finds grape and apple, but then has to hunt more carefully for cranberry. Eventually he finds them pushed back on one of the shelves for some reason. He pulls the box forward and grabs a couple of packs of cartons.

'The littles picky about what flavor they get?'

"Insanely. Theta and Eta like purple drinks. Eta likes apple juice."

See, it makes sense to them. "I do cranberry. It's good for your body. Omega likes it to."

And there are other things they can get here too. Delta reaches past Sigma and gets a bottle of veggie juice as well. "Useful for cooking."

'Everyone's got food quirks,' he says with a grin.

He leans out of the way as Delta reaches past him for the vegetable oil and his grin grows at his friend's words. 'I wouldn't know.' Cooking with water ends in disaster for him often enough that cooking with oil isn't even a possibility.

"Well, this cheap tomato veggie juice is perfect as a soup base," Delta explains. "And I have to take care of my siblings a lot."

He puts it in the basket and continues to lead them down the aisle. "Thank you for offering to come with me to do this today. I'll save more if I can apply all of my coupons at once rather than making multiple trips."

'Looks like it'll last a while as well.' Or a while for the Ais, anyway. It would last a typical sized family a couple of weeks, probably, so it'll probably last them a few days.

'Save you time and effort as well. You're welcome though.'

"I have so much work to do," Delta admits. "ANd I haven't seen TC yet."

He wants time with the other man. He just wants to experience a moment of shared... Well, he just wants to not feel like himself right now.

"You're... not going to ask me about everything?"

'If you need help lightening the load, give me a shout. Not the TC load, though, that's all yours.' Or not. But Delta knows TC sleeps around, he said so. Shut up, York.

'Do you want to talk about it?' he returns.

That's... a suspicious response. Delta frowns at his friend before continuing down the aisle. "Unfortunately at this point both Omega and I desire time out of the house, and so it is difficult to find time to unwind in, after all that has happened. We have to work our schedules out so someone is there to watch the little ones."

'I can keep an eye on them,' he offers. 'I've been wanting to spend more time with them all for ages, I've missed them.' He's barely seen any of the Ais under twenty since his coma.

"Only if Sigma's there as well," Delta offers. Because then Omega can't complain. And there will be someone who knows where all the medical stuff is, who knows what people will and won't eat, and who just... it would help if he had Sigma there.

'That's fine with me.' He'd feel a bit better if there was someone who knew the finer details of how to handle the Ais kids with him. 'I promise we won't get distracted with eat-sh other.'

"I don't believe that, but I believe Theta is more than capable of getting your attention if the twins need you. And so he's really going to be the one in charge of the house," Delta informs him simply.

Sigma with authority. York for protection and manual labor. Theta for common sense.

'Believe it or not, Sigma and I are capable of focusing on things other than eat-sh other when we're together. We've actually got rather good at it.' And while he understands that their reputation precedes them, it does slightly annoy him that everyone thinks they become two uncontrollably horny teenagers in each other's presence.

'I bet Theta will love that.'

"In your place, I'm not sure focus would be easy for me, were I with someone I was in love with," Delta answers simply as he pulls them over to the produce. So much needs to be gained here. More potatoes, more fruit. Definitely a sack of onions. And to think, when they have a larger home there will be more kitchen space for more food. Amazing.

"Is he happy with you? Sigma and I... don't talk about relationships much."

Because Delta doesn't want to think about his own. What he's lost. The chances he'll never have and how Sigma was at the core of that.

'It took a bit of practice, but you don't have to be actively expressing your love for it to be there,' he says, adding a bag of carrots. 'Or we don't anyway. Sometimes we just... hang out. Sig does his homework, I look at lock schematics. We just do normal stuff, but together. And sure, sometimes we get distracted by one another, to varying levels.'

Should they be talking about this? It's dangerously close to the stuff he's trying to avoid. He'll be careful.

'I sure hope so. And if he wasn't, I hope he'd tell me. From what I can tell though, he is.' He's certainly happy with Sigma.

"I miss that," Delta says simply to the idea of just being together with someone he loves. And he leaves that at that.

"Have you determined what you might do if he goes away for graduate school?"

This concerns him. Sigma shouldn't lose him just because he has ambition.

Uh oh, this is where he didn't want things to go.

He's trying to think of a change of topic when Delta sort of give him one himself.

'We're still talking about that,' he says. 'Part of it depends on where he ends up. If he's close enough, I'll visit when I can. If not... we're not sure yet.'

Delta halts his inspection of bell peppers and turns to look very hard at his friend. There is something calculating in his eyes. Maybe a question of how worthy he thinks York is for that 'we're not sure' comment. But he doesn't give his judgement yet.

"How serious are you about my younger brother? Is this just a fling for you, or a relationship where you're hoping the two of you can come to agreements for it to be more?"

In other words, if all went well, could he see himself as another brother?

He doesn't like that look. Quite apart from feeling like it's drilling into him, it looks doubtful. And the questions annoys him even more.

'Are you kidding? Delta, I've never been more serious about anyone in my whole life, of course it isn't a fling! Putting aside that flings don't usually last this long, they're usually only about the sex and we're way more than that, that's why we're talking things out to figure out how we can make it all work instead of just saying "see ya" and being done with it as soon as one of us goes off anywhere.' Does Delta really think so little of him? Of them?

And that gets Delta smiling, warm and happy in a way he hasn't smiled in so long. York has been judged, and found to be more than acceptable.

"That fire, that passion... don't let it go. Always fight for him, no matter who stands in your way. And if he pushes, fight for him before just giving up. Giving up... That's not you, York. You promise me you will fight to see my brother happy."

He blinks. That's... Why does he feel like a kid being praised on a high scoring exam by a teacher?

But what Delta says, that melts his anger away and he smiles back. 'I promise.' And he will. He's not losing Sigma without a fight. 'We... We've agreed that if something's wrong between us, we talk about it.'
