Log: There's No Place Like Home

There's no place like home, York thinks as he grins up at the building he's been away from for almost exactly two months. It hasn't changed at all, not that he'd expected it to, but the familiarity makes him smile so wide it almost hurts his face.

Sure, he's wheelchair bound and will be until he can get the strength back into his legs, but he's finally home and will soon be back among his friends. Plus he knows the medics here, so the care will be with people he's familiar with and who are familiar with him and that will make things a hell of a lot easier.

He's wheeled up to the door where he insists on letting himself in, tapping in the codes he's known for years and thanking God for the hundredth time that the bullet to his head didn't damage his motor functions. Learning to deal with only having one eye had been hard, recovering his speech is going to be just as tricky. Having to relearn how to move, how to use his hands would have been beyond torture.

The door swings open and he's pushed inside, grinning even at the plain hallway while he takes his helmet - his own helmet, finally returned to him that morning - off and holds it in his lap. He's been practicing with Obi for this.

'I'mm o- h-ho~ome!'

York snickers as Wash "accidentally" uses his slip up for Maine. And Maine just goes with it which is a relief in itself. Of course, the man understands what this is like, he gets it. Shouldn't have expected anything other than this, really. But he's still grateful.

He points to the chocolate chip. Why have plain when there's chocolate chip? Now where's that coffee Wash mentioned?

Wash is already on the coffee, filling up a too-large "I <3 NY" mug with the brown elixir.

"One hundred percent, grade-A caffeine goodness. Don't drink it too fast. We don't want you to like, go into shock or anything."

Chocolate chip it is. Maine doesn't remember what toppings York likes, but he probably can't go wrong with whipped cream. He hands York the plate and the canister, then rifles through a drawer for silverware.

York pulls his mug over to him and takes a moment to just breathe it in. Hell, even the smell is delicious. Good thing Sigma snuck him coffee sometimes or he might be overwhelmed. He drinks it carefully, wary of the heat and nods in thanks to Maine when he setd the plate of pancakes down.

Wash grins. "Okay. We've got coffee, pancakes, whipped cream, festive decorations....the only thing we're missing is a song."

Everything is going to plan. This is perfect. Wash loves a well-executed plan.

Maine raises an eyebrow. Nobody warned him about this.

York looks up excitedly, only to almost snort coffee when he sees Maine's expression. Fortunately, he catches himself and manages to swallow before laughing.

That's because Wash only thought of it a few minutes ago. "I'll be right back," he calls, dashing out of the kitchen.

A few minutes later he returns with a small boom box playing Voulez-Vous, and looking very proud of himself.

He shakes his head. Well, he did say he missed the noise. So he helps himself to a double-stack of blueberry pancakes with extra fruit, syrup, and whipped cream, and watches York's reaction to the music.

York knows exactly what's going on from the first note and he laughs as his favorite song starts to play. Wow, they must have really missed him if they're willingly playing ABBA for him.

"You get this once," Wash says, trying to be mock-serious. He'd look serious if he wasn't laughing so hard. "Once, and then it's only ABBA at reasonable volumes."

[maine_makes_growly_noises]

Well, at least there's that restriction. Maine smiles around a mouthful of pancake.

Pfft, they've rarely stopped him before. Sure, this time they started it, but it will hardly be the last time ABBA blasts around the base now he's back.

Wash helps himself to a pancake as well. "I'm serious, man. I'll hide the boom box if I have to. You'll never find it."

[maine_makes_growly_noises]

Wash is in on the threats, too. York doesn't stand a chance. Maine relaxes against the counter.

Oh, he'll find a way. And now that they've tempted him, he's going to have to find a way to rig up the base's intercom system to play ABBA all over the building.

But for now, pancakes.

Oh, no. That's not plotting on York's face. That's scheming.

Wash is only slightly afraid. "Maine, we're doomed."

[maine_makes_growly_noises]

Maine snorts. "Has to get out of his wheelchair first." That gives them plenty of time to counter-plan.

'Ooh!' Low blow! He's definitely getting them now. As soon as he can. Well, he's still got the laser pen in his pocket, maybe he can start with that.

"Who has to get out of the wheelchair?" Sigma comes in from the bathroom to hear York's beloved music blasting from the speakers. This is even more of a party, with streamers and everything. He's excited for York. Besides, those pancakes smell incredible.

Excellent, now Sigma's arrived. Everything, or at least the most important things, that York likes is here.

"York does," Wash replies. "But not so he can wire the sound system to blast ABBA through the halls."

[maine_makes_growly_noises]

"Not yet." York seems plenty content to sit and eat in his chair. That may change now that his boyfriend is in the room. Unless they ask, Maine won't worry about helping him out, though.

York doesn't even try to hide his grin. It's partly to do with his plans for ABBA, but also because he's managed to get the laser out of his pocket while Wash was talking to Sigma and is now hiding it under his left hand while projecting the light on the wall and innocently continuing to eat with his right hand.

Sigma sees the flicker of red in York's hand and tries not to look, especially when the red dot appears on the wall. Of course York is still a prankster after everything. He's been warned about this, of course, and he knows enough that he circles around to the counter to grab some pancakes while the shenanigans start.

"Yeah, so anyway, we made pancakes, help your--"

What is that.

Wash's gaze snaps to the little red dot on the wall. A laser. A fucking laser.

That thing better not move.
