Nida, invited over and with express orders to see that Theta behaves and starts his packing for the family's move, waits at the door after he's rung the bell. In his hands rests a box of assorted cookies from the store bakery, in his backpack some games in case the littlest ones he's heard about need distracted, and on his lips a small smile. Finally he can check in on the little guy for real.

'You're my best friend, you give me loads,' he argues.

"I can't give you playing together at school. Helping you with projects. Going on cool field trips and making jokes together. I may get a job that makes it harder for me to see you at times too. There's a lot I can't do, even if I want to. And friends your own age are important."

'You do all of those except playing at school. I don't mind if you get another job, you need the money and we'd be able to work something out. You do enough and I love it, I don't need any more friends my age!'

[skyward_eyes]

"You do," Nida counters, his voice the tiniest bit sharp. "Trust me, I know. I know what you lose when you don't have this stuff growing up."

Theta flinches and buries deeper against Nida, shaking his head. 'They couldn't give me anything you don't.'

[skyward_eyes]

"YOu're wrong. I don't know about comics or games or movies. I can't teach you how to treat people your age either. I can't help you learn how to work with people who know and understand this world. I'm an outsider, Theta."

It's frustrating tha the doesn't get this.

'You can learn about comics and stuff, and the other things I don't have to be friends with them to learn. I don't care if you're an outsider, you're really great and I like talking to you and being with you.'

"Well, you can be friends with me and other people at the same time," Nida tries to explain.

'But not as good friends,' he protests.

[skyward_eyes]

"You can be good friends with other kids and still have me as your best friend," Nida promises, his voice firm.

He bites his lips. 'I guess...'

[skyward_eyes]

"I promise that as long as I'm here and you want me, I'm your best friend," Nida promises him firmly. "But I don't want to be your only friend. Your only person friend. A puppy doesn't count. You need more friends than that."

'Rex does count,' he mutters. 'Wash is a person, you're not the only one. But you'll always be my best friend.'

A dog doesn't count, regardless of what Theta or Rinoa says.

"I want to be your best friend," Nida agrees. "I just want you to have more friends. Friends your own age at that."

'I'll maybe makes some at the new school then,' he mumbles, looking down.

[skyward_eyes]

"I know you are," Nida smiles. "And you're going to strike them as being super cool. And they'll envy you having a friend like me, but in a good way."

'I don't want to be the center of attention,' he says. 'Just a few friends.'

[skyward_eyes]

"Then make a small group of personal friends," Nida smiles. "That can be great too."

[trustandfireworks]

'That could... maybe be okay.' Better than lots and lots of friends. There would be too many people.

[skyward_eyes]

"We do that at my school," Nida explains. "Small teams train together sometimes. It's ready made friends who trust teach other. It's nice."

'That must make things easier,' he says.

[skyward_eyes]

"Easier, not not always nice," Nida shrugs. The first person he was assigned to made him miserable.

'So not always a good way to make friends?' Is there any good way of making friedns? Theta certainly hasn't found it yet.

"Well, I have an idea for how to meet people you'll like at your new school," Nida offers.

'Really? What is it?'
